Gabriel Martinez and Chad States are both Philadelphia-based artists that have recently completed extensive photographic bodies of work that are receiving national and international attention. Both bodies of work look at unique facets of male homosexual culture and desire. Martinez, in his recent body of work exhibited in Boston, photographed groups of gay men who come together for safe sex encounters. States, meanwhile, has traveled nationally documenting men that "cruise" for anonymous sex in the woods. This body of work was recently released in a beautiful book entitled Cruising.

The event at the Print Center in Philadelphia (6PM on the 23rd, free to the public) will be a discussion between the two artists and the public, examining the complex issues that bring together and also differentiate the sexual cultures depicted in these fabulous bodies of work.

The Philadelphia Photo Arts Center is pleased to announce Of the Ordinary, a group exhibition including the work of Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin, Alyse Emdur, Ron Jude, Jason Lazarus, Christian Patterson and Ofer Wolberger.

At a time when photography itself is undergoing a tremendous transformation within popular culture and the art world alike, the act of appropriation has become imbued with a new kind of energy. With a galaxy of images circulating without boundaries, moving from one place to another, we can only speculate on what their final resting place(s), if any, may be. Each time the context of a photograph changes, whether it be a digital file or a physical print, the ways in which it is experienced, understood and reinterpreted will also adapt. The act of working with other people’s photographs, whether they are new, old, prints, digital files or otherwise, has been given a new relevance by the mitigating circumstances of contemporary life and image-making. This extends the mutability of meaning embedded within the medium itself and grants more permission to the viewer and author to generate new contexts and interpretations.

Of the Ordinary is comprised of imagery that was never intended to be experienced in the context of a gallery or museum. The focus of this exhibition is an interest in the political implications of portraiture, highlighting the various ways in which images are created, distributed and experienced in a contemporary setting. Many of the projects highlighted in this exhibition employ the method of editing an existing body of images to further investigate their meaning.

Project Basho's Onward Summit and Compe opening 2/11/12

ONWARD Summit is an annual photography conference and networking event for those who are inspired by unique imagery and perspectives. The event is hosted by Project Basho and the daily programming will take place at the Crane Old School space in the Old Kensington section of Philadelphia.

Coinciding with the opening reception of the ONWARD Compé exhibition, this one-night event will bring engaging presentations by established and emerging artists and an intimate party to share current projects and portfolios with the fellow members of the photography community. This format will actively promote the intersection of visual influences and dialogue, which is the foundation of this distinctive event. Photographers Todd Hido and Hiroh Kikai will give keynote addresses and other discussions include a talk between photographer Zoe Strauss and curator Peter Barberie about the mid-career retrospective Zoe Strauss: Ten Years at the Philadelphia Art Museum. 57 photographs from 50 photographers will be on exhibit as part of Compé at the Project Basho gallery. Please join PennDesign for this lecture by Photographer and Filmmaker Charlie White. White is an internationally exhibited artist whose 2008 film "American Minor" was selected to screen at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, as well as the Cannes Film Festival.

White’s work has been discussed and reviewed in periodicals and journals such as The New York Times, Artforum, Frieze, Flash Art, Modern Painters, The New Yorker, Wired, lacanian ink, and EXIT Image and Culture. In addition, his works have been included in two Thames and Hudson surveys,The Photograph as Contemporary Art, by Charlotte Cotton, and The Body in Contemporary Art, by Sally O’Reilly.

Jamie Diamond (Lecturer) interviewed in Dummy Magazine

Jamie Diamond, a Lecturer in the UPenn Undergraduate Fine Arts Department has an interview by Olver Gehrs examining her work as it relates to the theme "Family" in the German publication, Dummy. The magazine is a monothematic publication curated by an art director. This issue's theme was "Familie" and in it she discusses her work "Created family" where Diamond posts personal ads on the internet looking for different family members in order to create family portraits.

An excerpt from the interview:
Dummy: How would your perfect family look like? In which of your pictures would you fit, do you think?
JD: The starting point for all of the portraits were my own memories and experiences, I have folders of our own family portraits that inspired me. It's strange, I feel each family portrait I created is a representation of my own family and I could fit into any of them. Each shoot was such a personal experience and I was part of all of the families for as long as they existed, from when they met to when they parted. The family only existed in that space and I was the creator of it all.

Tetsugo Hyakutake (MFA 2009) in show at ICA Singapore

"Videologue” is a neologised term from the words ‘video’ and ‘dialogue’ – suggesting the form of communication through video art. Conceptualised by visual artists Urich Lau from Singapore and Cheng Guangfeng from Beijing, the first exhibition was held in Beijing on March 2011, hosted by Sunshine International Art Museum. In the upcoming exhibition, Videologue - Video Art Exhibition / Exchange: Beijing – Singapore – Tokyo, it explores issues and situations of the human dilemma and dissociation produced by geological, territorial and cultural shifts in contemporary life, as interpreted by the participating artists.

Artists: Urich Lau, Lim Shengen and Teow Yue Han (Singapore), Cheng Guangfeng, Han Tao, Li Ning and Shen Shaomin (China) and Tetsugo Hyakutake (Japan).

Alec Soth "Somewhere to disappear" screening at PPAC tonight

The Philadelphia Photo Arts Center is pleased to host a film screening of Somewhere to Disappear, a film by Laure Flammarion and Arnaud Uyttenhove starring American photographer Alec Soth.Somewhere to Disappear is a film about the desire to run away.

For his most recent project Broken Manual, Soth investigates the places in which people retreat to escape civilization. Soth photographs monks, survivalists, hermits and runaways, but this isn't a conventional documentary project on life "off the grid." Why do people run and hide? The young European filmmakers followed Soth over the course of two years for answers. The film is about men, America, Alec Soth and the dream to disappear.

Alec Soth (b. 1969) is a photographer born and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His photographs have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney and São Paulo Biennials. In 2008, a large survey exhibition of Soth's work was exhibited at Jeu de Paume in Paris and Fotomuseum Winterthur in Switzerland. In 2010, the Walker Art produced a large survey exhibition of Soth's work entitled From Here To There. Alec Soth's first monograph, Sleeping by the Mississippi, was published by Steidl in 2004 to critical acclaim. Since then Soth has publishedNIAGARA (2006), Fashion Magazine (2007) Dog Days, Bogotá (2007) The Last Days of W (2008) andBroken Manual (2010). In 2008, Soth started his own publishing company, Little Brown Mushroom. Soth is represented by Sean Kelly in New York, Weinstein Gallery in Minneapolis, and is a member of Magnum Photos.

Sarah Stolfa's (Lecturer) PPAC is pleased to host a book launch party and signing of photographer Chad States’s first monograph Cruising.
The act of “cruising” has long since been a part of gay culture, in which men with common desires meet one another in public places such as parks, public rest rooms, and roadside wooded groves. Similar to the spaces themselves, they find each other hidden in plain sight with the use of silent signals and cues. States’s Cruising depicts these locations and the men who make use of them throughout the country.

From the Pacific Northwest to New England, States’s photographs portray hidden clearings, forest-lined parking lots, and other predetermined paths in which these encounters take place. By visually representing these public landscapes and the men who occupy them for private use, States’s Cruising exposes this transgressive tradition within the gay community, dragging it out of the woods and into the light of the public eye.
Chad States obtained a BA from Evergreen State College and an MFA from Tyler School of Art. States was an Artist in Residence at Light Work during the summer of 2009, and received the Emerging Artist Fellowship for the Delaware Division of the Arts in 2008. His work is included in the permanent collections of Light Work and the Julie Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. States’s work has been exhibited nationwide in Hous Projects, New York; Greg Kucera Gallery, Seattle; and FLUXspace, Philadelphia, among others. Chad States currently resides in Philadelphia, PA.

Taking its title from a song by R&B artist Shuggie Otis, Inspiration Information is an open examination of the subconscious drives that inform our making practices. What made you become an artist? What ideas are at the core of your art practice? Like Otis’s soul-driven, dreamy expression of the happiness and inspiration one can get from true love, the show looks at the myriad of ways that our artistic interests and practices are deeply woven into our lives. The exhibition uses this song as a parallel for framing personally motivated practices in art making.

Inspiration Information opens on Friday October 21 at the Maas Building, 1325 Randolph Street, Philadelphia, and runs through November 12th, 6pm. This exhibition will include video, installation, painting, sculpture, and photography. Anna Neighbor (Lecturer) has show at Vox Populi, opening 11/4

Heaven is place where nothing ever happens is a continuation of Anna Neighbor's interest in making manifest the often suppressed yet essential concerns surrounding existence in lieu of mortality. The basic driving forces of making, keeping, and losing are laid bare with simple gestures that often take the form of the trace, utilizing materials and methods such as rubbings, imprints, photographic images, videos, mirrors and simple drawings. Their function is not to create a new, lived spectacle for the viewer but rather act as shadows or reflections of the viewer, tethered to their brighter and fuller source. In this case, the works tap into the force and beauty of virility, the wear of vigor on the body, and the tenacious desire to create.

Anna Neighbor was a 2010 Wind Challenge recipient, resulting in a solo exhibition at the Fleisher Memorial in Philadelphia. She lives in Philadelphia and teaches photography at the University of Pennsylvania and Moore College of Art and Design.

Grizzly Grizzly is pleased to present our inaugural call for entries, ‘Other Possible Titles,’ a survey of contemporary art juried by the members of the collective. The thirty-five artworks selected — culled from nearly 250 submissions — represent the wide range of artistic strength and thoughtfulness we witnessed from our artistic peers throughout the process.

By far their largest exhibition to date, ‘Other Possible Titles’ will utilize the entirety of the gallery and spill out into the adjoining floor. Although incredibly divergent in media, the work on a whole demonstrates a particular intelligence and awareness of material and play within contemporary practices – whether it be through installation, photography, sculpture, video, or painting and drawing. .

Throughout the duration of the exhibition, Grizzly Grizzly will encourage visitors to vote on their favorite work. The artist receiving the most votes will receive a solo exhibition in the 2012 gallery season.

Stephen Grebinski (MFA '11) has recently had three of his books added to the Booklet Library in Tokyo, Japan. The medium-scale library is a collection of small press booklets/zines, book works, and architecture related publications. Their interest is in the support, provision, and promotion of a cross-section of the goings on in small press. Their collection list online represents contributions and additions from 2011 (along with our publications) and is slowly being updated to include most titles from 2008-present. Introducing the ICA Salon. Inspired by the exhibitions on view, this season the ICA will host a series of informal conversations about issues relating to medium, process, and the studio. We’ve invited four groups of artists, critics, and curators to gather every other week to talk about their current projects and what is at stake in contemporary art practice. Each salon is loosely organized around a theme aimed at raising further questions and conversation with the audience. The discussion continues over refreshments and picks up again at the next salon.

Where does an artwork begin and end? In this discussion we will take a moment to think about practices that reflect on process and the material conditions of an artwork’s production, while also considering the parameters within which art moves—both inside, outside, and between institutions and systems of capital. Our guests will share their experiences working with art objects in transit, making works that change over time, and finding inspiration in alternative economies.

Leigh Van Duzer (MFA '10) in group show "The Build Up" at Fowler Arts Collective

Fowler Arts Collective is pleased to present The Build Up, an exhibition of new work by Heather Ramsdale, Gabriela Salazar, Sara Schneckloth, and Leigh Van Duzer.

Working across mediums including sculpture, photography, site-sensitive installation, and drawing, the common thread through The Build Up is the transformation of visible structures and the investigation of infrastructure. With source materials including found objects, walls, the studio space, and new home construction, each artist is drawn to the built environment with a curiosity about how things are made and how to surpass functionality. There is a sense of attachment to breaking down and reshaping personal objects in order to create a new relationships to them, as well as a studied approach to the labor of literally building walls, first with stones, then with pencil. Some of the work translates photographic imagery to sculptural object, or referent to drawing, as a way to discuss the possibilities of dimensionality in a print. Site-sensitive installation responds to the gallery's unique history, by transferring images directly onto the walls and floorboards of the exhibition space. The artists bring the process of building into the studio and the exhibition space to address this primary human motive.

In her recent work, Leigh Van Duzer transforms photographic prints into three-dimensional sculptures that engage the viewer in a corporeal manner. Her interest in the conceptual and material flexibility of images has expanded into re-forming architectural structures in site-sensitive installations. Van Duzer received her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2010, and her BA from Hampshire College in 2001. She has been awarded the Daisy Soros Prize to attend the Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Austria. She has also received fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center and the Hambidge Center.

The Lugo Land Residency is an ongoing lens-based artist project in Lugo, Italy. Lugo is near Ravenna in the Emilia-Romagna region, and has a unique history that is actively being explored by residents of this project. The Lugo Land Project provides an enriching residency experience where artists have the opportunity to make work and become involved in the artist community by giving lectures, exhibiting artwork, and contributing to a publication with their work made in and around the small town of Lugo. Past residents have included photographers such as Tim Davis, Graciela Iturbide, and Guido Guidi.

PennDesign will be awarding one Residency to a current PennDesign MFA student during the Winter Break. Please join us for this informative presentation on the Project and the proposal process for this year.

Kelsey Halliday Johnson was the Penn fellow last year, December 2010-January 2011.
She will present past work from the residency as well as her work and ideas on the project.

All eyes will be on George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film this fall as it presents one the largest exhibitions in its history — The Unseen Eye: Photographs from the W.M. Hunt Collection. More than 500 photographs by the masters of the medium will be on view Oct. 1, 2011 through Feb. 19, 2012. The Eastman House is dedicating all of its primary gallery space to this exhibition.

Earlier this year The New Yorker referred to the collector as “the legendary” W.M. Hunt. He is a renowned curator and dealer who has been collecting photographs for 40 years. A self-described “champion of photography,” he is well-known for his “eye” and sense of humor. Hunt describes the collection as “magical, heart-stopping images of people in which the eyes cannot be seen.”

The photographs of The Unseen Eye have a common theme — the gaze of the subject is averted, the face obscured, or the eyes firmly closed. The images evoke a wide range of emotions and are characterized, by what, at first glance, the subject conceals rather than what the camera reveals.

This seminar examines various theories and methods for the study of the film/TV industry and the communities of workers and professionals that comprise it. Our focus is not on “the production of culture” (i.e., how film/TV produce mass or popular culture through their movies and series) but rather on “cultures of production” (i.e., how production worlds themselves function as cultural expressions, social networks, and communities). Traditional critical and cultural studies tend to focus on how entertainment, aesthetic experience, ideology, meaning, pleasure, hegemony, identity, etc. are produced or formed by film/TV’s onscreen products (films, series, video games). But this course turns the table and will investigate the ways that those same societal downstream “effects” can also be seen as generative forces that cultivate certain approaches to production over others; and certain kinds of organization and behavior at studios and production companies rather than others.

John T. Caldwell, is Professor of Cinema and Media Studies at UCLA. His books include: Production Culture: Industrial Reflexivity and Critical Practice in Film and Television (Duke, 2008), Televisuality: Style, Crisis and Authority in American Television (Rutgers, 1995), Electronic Media and Technoculture (ed., Rutgers, 2000), New Media: Digitextual Theories and Practices (co-edited, Routledge, 2003), and Production Studies: Cultural Studies of Media Industries (co-edited with Vicki Mayer and Miranda Banks, 2009). He is also the producer/director of the award winning feature documentaries Freak Street to Goa: Immigrants on the Rajpath (1989) and Rancho California (por favor), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2002.

In the 1970s, adding text to a photograph took on the mantle of a radical act, politicizing the image by undoing its autonomy and affirming its character as sign. Such claims consciously echoed those made in the 1930s by Walter Benjamin for the political force of the caption. Yet, historically, it was exceptional for a photographic image to be encountered free from the overdeterminations of writing. From Talbot’s Pencil of Nature to the illustrated press of the 1890s, from the archiving systems of the late nineteenth century to the picture magazines of the 1930s, the photograph never occupied a pristine space. What does this tell us about radical theory in the 1930s and 1970s? More broadly, what does it entail for our view of photographic meaning, the notion of the purely visual image and attempts to define the history of photography as the history of a distinct medium? This seminar will come at these questions backwards, moving from postconceptual practices back to those hybrid technological products that prompted exaggerated expectations but also exacerbated deep uncertainties about the status of the photograph that haunt us still, all the more in the age of the photograph’s digital dissemination.

John Tagg is Professor of Art History and Comparative Literature at Binghamton University. His books, which often focus on the relationship between photography and power, include The Burden of Representation: Essays of Photographies and Histories, Grounds of Dispute: Art History, Cultural Politics and the Discursive Field, and The Disciplinary Frame: Photographic Regimens and the Capture of Meaning.

"Not a Vacant Lot" features the Play House by Marianne Bernstein and an architectural installation by a class of PennDesign Landscape Architecture students. The installation is in a vacant lot at on 313 S Broad Street in Philadelphia and the work in the lot deals with the continuing vacancy problem facing the city of Philadelphia (with over 40,000 vacant lots).

Performances will be held daily from within the Play House from 4-7pm. Video screenings by 10 artists as well as award-winning photographs of Philadelphia vacant lots by Daniel Traub will be projected on the cube from 7-10pm daily. Kelsey Halliday Johnson (MFA '12) has been working to facilitate this project with artist-curator Marianne Bernstein. Tamara Suber (MFA '11) is one of the ten performance and video artist featured.

The closing reception for Design Philadelphia will be held at "Not a Vacant Lot" on Saturday the 22nd 7-10pm. Beer will be provided by Triumph Brewing Company and music by Broadzilla DJs with special guests.

Christopher Payne (Penn MArch'96), who spoke at PennDesign last spring about his photographic series "Asylum" is currently exhibiting some of the work at the Drexel University Leonard Pealstein Gallery through October 29th. Continuing Payne's interest in architecture, the series of photographs documents years of research into the history of the little seen public mental health system from the early 20th century. His new images are in stark contrast to popular media images of institutional squalor, terrifying environments that make fodder for horror movies, and systematized abuse against patients typically shown of state mental institutions. Instead Payne looks a lost trend of opening large public institutions in small rural towns with expansive properties, fresh air and gardens (for effective treatment) and world class architecture that was meant to cheer patients and create an environment for rehabilitation. These buildings were made by preeminent architects, but proved expensive to manage with state funds and exorbitant with a waning interest in the importance of mental health. Each institution was designed to be an entirely self sufficient community with the labor of the patients, providing their own clothing, food, and needs from within the institution making them architectural novelties.

The abandoned ruins in Payne's photos show a historical moment, both cultural and architectural, that changes the way we look at the history of mental health in our country. The work took nearly a decade to complete, with Payne getting unrestricted access from numerous states to document their history. 22 of his large format images are on display at the Pearlstein Gallery and it is worth the quick walk over to Drexel to see his technically fabulous and provoking images in person.

Since 1994, Hamza Walker has served as Director of Education for The Renaissance Society at The University of Chicago - a non-collecting museum devoted to contemporary art. He also writes and has had articles and reviews published in such publications as Trans, New Art Examiner, Parkett and Artforum.

The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago is one of the country’s premiere exhibition spaces devoted exclusively to contemporary art. Hal Foster is an internationally renowned author of books on modern and contemporary art and theory and a Professor of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University. In 1991 he joined the editorial board of the international journal "October", a position he continues to hold. In addition to several edited collections, Foster’s books include Compulsive Beauty (1993), The Return of the Real (1996), Design and Crime (and Other Diatribes) (2002), and Prosthetic Gods (2004). He is also the author, with Rosalind Krauss, Yve-Alain Bois, and Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, of the textbook Art since 1900: Modernism, Antimodernism, Postmodernism (2004). His new book, Figment: Painting and Subjectivity in the First Pop Age, is due out in 2011. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Foster continues to write regularly for October, ArtForum, and The London Review of Books. Within photography he has written about conceptual photography, photo montage, appropriation, and postmodern photographic practices.

Olivia Coffey’s vivid color photographs capture the fragility of partnership and the fluid, subtle and often fleeting nature of intimacy. Calling upon cohabitating couples in “practical… profitable [and] constant” partnerships, Coffey shoots the duos posed comfortably in their shared homes. Printing the final selections as large scale Archival Pigment Ink Jet Prints on luster paper, the artist displays the intricacies of private domestic space in the larger than life, hyperreal proportions one might associate with film, television and related media.

Olivia Coffey was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and currently resides in San Francisco.

Nancy Davenport is a welcome addition to in the Department of Fine Arts, where she has been appointed as Assistant Professor. Davenport's teaching, commitment to cross-disciplinary exchange, and international reputation as a significant interdisciplinary artist working in the fields of photography, animation, and digital media will make her a valued member of the standing faculty. Davenport explores photography through a series of computer-manipulated photographs that challenge illusions of the real embedded within the photographic medium. She examines the politics of representation by tracing the continuities of historical photographic practices within contemporary digital culture. Recent projects interrogated the social structure of workers at manufacturing plants in Germany and China and the stigmas and complexities of brutalist architecture. In Last Rite, a performance and print-based work, Nsenga Knight reimagines historical events and presents a series of prints connecting Malcolm X’s transformative final ritual– his 1964 pilgrimage to Mecca, to his assassination and funeral rites in 1965. Last Rite re-sketches the final events and rituals in Malcom X's life, and commemorates the days in which they occurred. The Last Rite performance at the Brandywine Workshop addresses the audience as witness, catalyst and participant - blurring the lines between spectator space and performance, while prompting questions about communal and ethical responsibility. This performance score is the first in the Last Rite project and commemorates the funeral of Malcolm X forty six years ago on this date and time.

The performance will begin at 9:30 AM on Sunday, February 27, 2011 in the Glass Lobby Gallery at Brandywine Workshop, 728 South Broad Street (Avenue of the Arts). Ample free parking is available on the street and at MAB Paints’ parking lot next door.

This event is free and open to the public.

Knight earned a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Pennsylvania and an undergraduate degree in Film Production at Howard University. She is currently an artist in Residence at The Brandywine Workshop. Last Rite is generously supported by a Leeway Foundation Art and Change Grant.

Nexus Foundation for Today’s Art is celebrating 35 years as a co-operative of Philadelphia-based multi-disciplinary artists with an Alumni Invitational showcasing the diversity of those who have made and formed NEXUS over the last 35 years. Founded in 1975 as space for challenging, innovative and compelling art exhibitions, it has a rich tradition of stimulating creative thought and dialog among the artists and the public regarding the meanings and methods behind today’s art. NEXUS members have a history of challenging artistic tradition, investigating new mediums and re-exploring old concepts. The opportunities NEXUS provides have attracted many of Philadelphia’s most significant experimental artists. Since the inception of NEXUS, member artists have received nine Pew Fellowships in the arts, ten Independence Foundation Fellowships, and seven Leeway Foundation Emerging Artist awards. The Alumni Invitational articulates the diversity of NEXUS and will include painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, performance, installation and video work by 26 of its past members.

Wahl and Danges at the Tate Modern?

Brent Wahl (faculty) and Micah Danges (staff) will be featured along with the other artists at the Vox Populi artist collective at the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall as part of a three-day festival entitled “No Soul For Sale – A Festival of Independents,” from May 14-16. Tate Modern is working in collaboration with artist Maurizio Cattelan and curators Cecilia Alemani and Massimiliano Gioni to stage this event.

Just released this month, Wahl and Danges are also two of the artists featured in Vox Populi's first publication, We're Working On It. It’s a 120 page book that includes the history of Vox Populi (by Amy Adams), the starting point for a history of artist-run spaces in Philadelphia (by Richard Torchia), and an essay on our city's identity as a center of artistic production (by Paul Galvez).

Seeing Voices focuses on the relationship between the artist, the work of art and the audience and how the artist's “visual voice” influences the content and subsequent reading of their work. If the artist's voice derives from the sum total of an artist's visual and conceptual strategies, what is the role of an artists' intentions, ethnic background, gender, age, and larger culture in forming that voice? In a post modern era is an artist's voice as likely to be a persona as an authentic voice, and how is this affected by technology, fashion, artistic tradition and the art market?

Work by 32 artists working in a variety of media/formats. Curated by Margery Amdur and Bruce Garrity and presented by the Rutgers/Camden Department of Fine Arts and the Camden County Cultural and Heritage Commission in cooperation with the Rutgers- Camden Center for the Arts. The exhibition is presented at the Stedman Gallery and the Hopkins House Gallery of Contemporary Art.
